Cycling stories: From training to teams to travel

Cyclist: Sameer Gokhale

Cycling team: Velo Valero

L’Étape San Antonio distance: 100 miles

Sameer borrowed a friend's bike and tried an organized fundraising ride. As he trained for it, he realized that his love for cycling that began when he was 10 years old was still there. An added benefit: it allowed him to stay healthy without straining his knees and shins, something he experienced while running.

"In 2016, I joined the Valero corporate cycling team as a rider and then a board member in 2017. It was a great way to make new friends and train with others to achieve my personal goals.

I found that San Antonio had an active cycling community built on mutual trust and friendships.I took on the responsibility of leading the Velo Valero team as a team captain in 2018 with the intention of getting more folks interested in cycling and working together with other local teams.

With the help of other board members and teams, we have been able to organize regular training rides and participate in cycling events in various parts of the country. All of this couldn't be possible without the support of my family.

In December 2021, I completed a long awaited dream of taking my bicycle to India and completing a century ride in my hometown! I'm now training to compete in my first race and accomplish some personal goals along the 100-mile course.”
